Once your Circle device is set up on your home Wi-Fi, you can use the Circle app to continue managing your Circle device remotely when you're away. Simply launch the Circle app while you're connected to another Wi-Fi network or your cellular data connection to access your Circle device and change its settings from anywhere.
Having trouble connecting to your Circle remotely?
Because the Circle app is connecting directly to your Circle device at home, there are a few things that can get in the way of the remote connection working properly. Here are a few things to consider if your Circle app is having trouble connecting to your Circle device at home:
- Confirm that your app is able to talk to your Circle device while at home
The Circle device uses some strict security measures to make sure that only permitted apps are able to talk to a particular Circle device. That permission is granted when you first setup Circle. If you are using a fresh installation of the app or if your app is associated with a different Circle device, you will need to address that first. If you are unsure, the easiest way to check is to see if you can access and manage your Circle device at home. If so, you have permission! If not, you'll need to get the passcode from the second admin and login at home. - Ensure that you have a strong Internet connection
If the Internet connection you are using (whether Wi-Fi or mobile data) is unstable or very weak, connecting to your Circle device will be difficult and may not work. If there is no Internet connection, you will be unable to manage your Circle device remotely. Occasionally, switching to Airplane mode and back can help to jumpstart your Internet connection as well and allow you to access your Circle device at that point. - Confirm that the Circle app is permitted to use Cellular Data
If on a cellular data connection and not another Wi-Fi network, be sure that the Circle app is allowed to use Cellular Data. Open your Settings app, scroll down and tap Circle, and make sure Cellular Data is switched on. Note that this only applies to iOS devices. - Confirm that your Circle device is properly paired to your network
Check the back of your Circle device to see if it is paired with your home Wi-Fi. If the light on the back is solid, it is successfully paired with your home Wi-Fi. If blinking, you will need to pair it to your home Wi-Fi. Click here to learn more. - Confirm the Circle device is turned ON
If your Circle device was turned off or if it lost connection to power and low battery power caused it to power down, the remote connection will not work. Turn the Circle device back on and try again. - Reboot your Circle device and router
In some cases, routers in particular can begin to reject certain kinds of communication. Because the Circle device's remote connection is unique, rebooting both your Circle device and the router itself may resolve the issue and allow the Circle app to access your Circle device while outside the home. - Move your Circle device closer or plug it in using the Ethernet cord
If the Circle device can't clearly communicate with your router, it won't be accessible remotely. Try moving the Circle device closer or plugging it in using the Ethernet cord that came with it, and then reboot both your Circle device and your router.
